We celebrate the life and memory of Luis “Papo” Samuel, Sr., who passed away on March 29, 2025, at the age of 62. A man full of heart, humor, and unwavering love for his family, Luis lived his life with joy, generosity, and a deep appreciation for the simple pleasures—good food, good music, and good company.
Born on August 19, 1962, to Alejandrina Samuel and Luis G. Samuel, Luis was someone who naturally brought people together. Whether he was hosting a family gathering with a big spread, cracking jokes just to make everyone laugh, or answering a call from someone in need, he was always present, always giving, always Luis.
He loved football, old-school music, and especially salsa—anything with a good rhythm and soul. You could often find him at the dominoes table, fully in his element, surrounded by laughter. He had a signature sense of humor and a soft spot for teasing his sister Ivonne, always trying to get a rise out of her, but always from a place of love.
Luis had a deep pride in his Puerto Rican roots and found joy in cooking and sharing the flavors he grew up with. His food, like his presence, was comforting, full of life, and made with love.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol Jones-Moore; his parents, Luis G. and Alejandrina Samuel; and his brother, Josué Samuel. Though we feel the weight of his loss, we also find peace in knowing he is now reunited with those he missed so dearly.
Luis leaves behind a beautiful and loving legacy in his five children: Eric Samuel, Luis Samuel, Jr., Jonathan Samuel, Justin Samuel, and Danielle Moore; his four grandchildren, who brought him endless pride and joy; and his eleven devoted sisters: Ivette Samuel, Jeanette Samuel, Lisette Samuel, Ivonne Samuel, Claudette Yahn, Annette Triggs, Noemi Samuel, Deborah Romero, Ruth Samuel, Iris Samuel, and Elizabeth Crespo, and a host of family and friends.
He was a brother, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend—but above all, he was someone who loved deeply and was deeply loved in return.
Luis’s laughter, warmth, and generous heart will live on in the memories we carry and the stories we tell. Though he may be gone from our sight, he will never be gone from our hearts.
